Illinois man arrested for dangerous boat driving.

Officials charged Jeff Yungen, age 50 of Moline, Illinois with unsafe operation of a powered watercraft after he was clocked by DNR officials at speeds over 70 mph while on the downtown Chicago river. The posted speed limit on that stretch of river is just 4 mph.
At over 17 times the speed limit, DNR officers state this is the most extreme case of speeding on the narrow waterway that they can recall. Even though the speed was extreme, DNR officers stated that they would have let Mr Yungen off with just a large fine, but when faced with the ticket, Mr Yungen became belligerent and combative. It was at that time that officials took Mr Yungen into custody.
In an exclusive Channel 23 news interview, Mr Yungen defended his actions, “This is just nuts! I endangered nobody. No other boats were in the area. And my boat creates a smaller wake while at speed, than it does while moving slowly. I just needed some calm water so that I could get some testing done.”
Mr Yungen has raced his powerboat with the American Power Boat Association many times, and has even competed internationally. He is currently out on bail pending a June court date. Until then, officials have ordered Mr Yungen to stay out of the Chicago river with his racing boat.
