Swine Show Kick’s off This Years Kentucky State Fair

Alecia Abney had pigs earlier this year named Piggie Smalls and Tupac.

A fan of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, Abney entered Tupac in the 4-H/FFA and Open Class Swine Show at this year’s Kentucky State Ag Expo and Fair.

Competing for the last time, 50-year-old 4-H member from Mt. Vernon walked away Monday as Grand Champion Reserve winner.
“This was a good way to go out” said Abney.
Abney and Tupac, who weighs 273 pounds, finished second behind Clear Spring resident Jarrett Wilson.

Jarrett, 14, who goes to Clear Spring High School and is a member of Clear Spring FFA, has been working on a pig farm for four years.

“I’ve really gotten to know what good pigs look like, and I got in the passion about four years ago,” he said.

This was Wilson’s third year competing in the show. He said every morning he would wash, exercise and feed Bruiser, who earned top honors.

“The pig that we picked out was a very good pig, and all of our hard work paid off,” he said.

Wilson and Abney will see their pigs sold Thursday evening at the market sale.

Ivy Hill Farm co-owner and swine show co-superintendent Steve Martin said the youths in the show took care of their pigs for at least three to four months, and the goal was to get their weight to about 250 pounds.

“They’ve worked real hard at getting the pigs presentable and feeding the best nutrition that they could possible feed,” he said.
