Citing enrollment and financial issues, the University of Montana said they would be dropping down to Division III for all sports starting in 2018. This cost saving measure would allow for UM to maintain the current Athletics they offer, but eliminate scholarships allowing them to save money for a possible return to Division I in 2028.
University of Montana President Sheila Stearns and UM Director of Athletics Kent Haslam will issue separate statements at a later date.
