Authorities in Florida have reported a shark attack on the Withlacoochee River near Madison’s Blue Springs. Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Phil Yabottom said a 42-year old Valdosta man who has not yet been identified was bitten by a shark while floating on his back in the river. He said he felt a tug on his foot as the shark pulled it into his mouth, but the man shook free and swam to shore. He was taken to the hospital for multiple puncture wounds to his foot.

Don Seentit saw the man come out of the water and said “I heard the guy yell, and saw him hopping a little bit and he came out of the water. I thought maybe he had gotten bitten by an aggressive catfish or stumped his toe or something, and then I saw blood gushing and then we went over there. We got to him and my buddy Rheemus had some first aid stuff. Rheemus used some duct tape and we wrapped his foot up real good. He was bit up pretty bad, but that duct tape don’t play.”

The shark was believed to be between three and five feet long.
