Optometrist “under pressure to perform” blows whistle on employer at GOC hearing.

The General Optical Council (GOC) has held an investigative session behind closed doors to hear claims of inappropriate prescribing at a Coventry opticians. An optometrist employed at the unnamed practice in Coventry has told of a culture of excessive bonuses for staff who are encouraged to over-prescribe glasses.

The whistleblower approached the GOC – the regulator of opticians, with tales of mis-selling products as a result of high sales targets. The staff member, whose identity has been withheld, is thought to have worked at the practice in the past and revealed all after leaving. Only known by court documents as SV he is said to have regularly seen children been sold unnecessary spectacles.
