Drunken tourist arrested for swearing in sign language

Glen Elizarde made history today – and he didn’t have to say a word.

The Fresno resident, on vacation in Oahu, apparently inappropriately used American Sign Language to signal other customers at the Mai tai bar and grill in Ala Moana shopping center according to KHNL Hawaii News Now reports.

Elizarde is believed to be the first tourist to be charged with Hawaii’s new zero tolerance for public vulgarity law. The California medical associate immediately resisted arrest and demanded his lawyers. Associates of Elizarde claim they were participating in a post wedding celebration and became alarmed after his “behavior changed after drinking 1 can of corona”.

KHNL Hawaii reports that Teriyaki Curtains, one of the defendants’ lawyers said in a statement that she hopes the event will bring awareness and deter others from using their fingers, especially the middle one, in public.
