Local surveyor fights off bear attack in Carthage

A local surveyor survived an attack by a black bear on Thursday. John Matthews, owner of Matthews Land Surveying and Mapping, PLLC, was working in the Carthage area when he was attacked from behind by the bear. Matthews quickly took control of the situation by putting the bear in a guillotine hold until the bear passed out. Matthews then proceeded to fashion a some rope out of nearby vines and branches which he used to tie the bear up with. Matthews was checked out by Moore County EMS and was reported to not suffer any injuries.
