Officer Rami Ghattas honored as Taylor Auxiliary Police Officer of the Year praised for his dedication

Cpl. Rami Ghattas said he was surprised when he was named recently as Taylor Auxiliary Police Officer of the Year.

But John Burgan, chief of the all-volunteer organization, said no officer was more worthy of the recognition for service year 2016. Cpl. Ghattas “dedicated to always trying to be a part of the solution.”

A native of a small town called Alfuhais in Amman Jordan, Cpl. Ghattas moved to the United States in 1999, the 43-year-old is the first Arab American to join the department in 2012. Like his fellow volunteer officers, he has a full-time job as a corporate security supervisor in Novi

Auxiliary officers get close to the action. Last year, Officer Ghattas pulled up to a motor vehicle accident. While assisting police officers at the scene, two more accidents occurred nearby. Officer Ghattas sprang into action and helped an individual who had suffered serious injuries and had no feeling on one side of his body.

“Fire rescue arrived on the scene and was able to extract that person and get them to the hospital quickly,” Ghattas said.

It is by these officers’ efforts, time and dedication that the city of Taylor is a better place and a safer for all to enjoy,” Chief Burgan said. “These officers are role models for their families, neighbors and all that come into contact with them. They epitomize the motto from another organization, ‘service above self.’ These officers inspire others to get involved and, if we all could give back, what a better place we would have to live.”
