Salem man wounded, charged after exchanging gunfire with police

Justin Tackett, 27, of Salem, Virginia was taken into custody Friday after noon after exchanging gunfire with police officers. The incident took place at around 2:45 p.m. When officers performed a routine traffic stop on melrose avenue.

Mr.Tackett exited his vehicle against police orders while they were running his identification, when ordered to return to his vehicle he refused and opened fire on the officers squad car. The officer was uninjured but struck Mr.Tackett in the shoulder with return fire. The suspect was transported to Roanoke memorial hospital where he remains in critical condition but is expected to recover. Criminal charges are pending upon his release.
