Railroad doubles its winnings

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA
Following the breakup of CSX, Norfolk Southern has been examining a way to cash in on its lines and use them to their maxes. Norfolk Southern was awarded $40 million to utilize for a double track on its Northern Tier Line. The project is estimated to take 18 months to complete. By late 2017 or early 2018, the railroad hopes to have at least partial double track and sidings complete.

The Port of Washingtonville at MP 19.6 will also see some improvements as a result of this. The money will be used to install new track, new signals, and new defect detectors. Any remaining money will be used on the port expansion, for new track and power. This is part of a very aggressive railroad improvement era. The railroad said in an email that the line will remain open during construction.
