Volunteer Firefighter from Kanawah County injured in hit and run accident.

Channel 23 News reporters responded to a hit and run accident late Sunday night in Dunbar West Virginia. Arriving on scene to see that Dunbar Avenue had been shut down by police and Fire Department personal. This accident happened infront of the Captain D’s restraunt.

Police have not yet released the name of the victim all that has been released is a 19 year old male was crossing the street when an unaware driver ran a red light. The driver hit this young man and didn’t think to call 911. The driver fled the scene leaving this young man laying in the street.

Dunbar police officer “David Ashworth” beginning his nightly patrol spotted an abstuction in the roadway and proceeded to check it out. We have officer Ashworth’s statement about what he had rolled up on.

Officer Ashworth says, ” I was just beginning my shift and doing my usual patrol when I saw something laying in the middle of Dunbar Avenue, I went to check it out to find out what was laying in the road. I pulled up and saw a male subject laying in the road covered in blood. I called over my radio for help and updated metro on the situation at hand. Next I began to aid the wounded citizen. When I got to this young man in the street I noticed he had a badge on his belt. At first I thought he may be a brother in blue until I paid a little more attention to what the badge said. Come to find out this young man is a volunteer firefighter. I rendered services the best I could untill paramedics and fire department officials arrived.”

This 19 year old male was transported to Campbell County hospital reports from the hospital say his condition is critical but he is expected to make a full recovery. Stay with us for following updates on this story.
