Mountain Lions in Berkshires

For years concerned and skeptical citizens of the Berkshires have had camp fire chats about Mountain Lions (or Cougars) still roaming the area. The pros and cons of such an existence have been lightly discussed and the department of Massachusetts Wildlife confirmed on Monday there is indeed a breeding population in the Berkshires.

When we asked Steve Stargell head of the Lenox chapter of Mass Wildlife what to do if you are confronted with one he replied “There is not much you can do. If he is hungry he will eat you. If he wants to play he will probably rip your face off.”

Citizens are asked not to leave meat in garbage cans unless properly bagged up. If you’re going on a hike you should bring a walking stick which will probably ward them off. More on this story to follow as new information unfolds.
