Baltimore, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 – Despite post-recession economic gains, the problem of long term unemployment and underemployment are far from over, and are particularly devastating in Baltimore for older (age 45 and over) workers. To help combat the issue, the Baltimore Job Hunters Support Group (BJHSG) and the Corner Community Center (CCC) have joined forces with Turning Point Solutions to hold “Coaches Corner,” a free, one-of-a-kind job search conference and match making event targeted for professionals, on Saturday, November 18, 2017, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

“Coaches Corner” is an in-person job search conference to assist older professionals in improving their ability to navigate a successful job search campaign. This 4-hour event includes workshops, coaching, panel discussions, and networking. The long-term unemployment (LTU) crisis has been called “the secret cancer that no one is addressing” and “a pandemic.” Currently, almost 7 million Americans are unemployed, 1.7 million of which comprise the long-term unemployed (those who have been unemployed for 6 months or more). The LTU rate remains higher than the pre-recession average. “There is a significant cost of long term unemployment for workers, their families, and Baltimore,” says Janet Glover-Kerkvliet, BJHSG co-facilitator and licensed therapist. “When someone is ‘downsized’ through no fault of their own, they experience shame, a loss of dignity, identity and self-respect. People over 45 represent 25.5% of the unemployed. Many of these people are not making ends meet. Meanwhile, employers are missing out on the contributions of our most experienced subject matter experts.”

Fortunately, there is some good news. “Nothing changes if nothing changes,” says Berri Wells, owner of Turning Point Solutions and the creator of “Coaches Corner.” “We help job changers—voluntary or forced—to develop a marketing mind-set and create a winning job search portfolio. The key to landing your next position is networking and know-how. We inform, inspire, and instruct through our workshops, panel discussions and coaching demonstrations. This is a unique opportunity for high caliber assistance.”
